Police put the brakes on drink and drug drivers as part of Operation Armada

Source: State of Victoria Police

Friday, 19 July 2019 22:30

A Carrum Downs man allegedly caught drug-driving was among six motorists to hand over their keys overnight as part of Operation Armada.

Dandenong Highway Patrol officers intercepted the 33-year-old motorcyclist last night (19 July).

The unlicensed rider was allegedly found to be in possession of ice and also tested positive to a preliminary drug test.

He was charged and remanded to appear at court, while his bike was impounded at a cost of more than $1000.

The local operation saw Highway Patrol officers, general duties police and officers from the Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section (RPDAS) crack down on driver impairment, in particular drink and drug-driving, across the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula areas.

It comes following a significant increase in the number of alcohol-related serious injury and fatal collisions over the past 12 months.

As part of the operation, police set up booze buses and also had officers mobile on the roads performing alcohol and drug tests.

Preliminary results from the operation included:

? 6 x impounds

? 9 x drink drivers

? 19 x drug drivers

Southern Metro Region Superintendent Adrian White said it was disappointing to find some motorists were still getting behind the wheel and making conscious decisions to drive while alcohol or drug-affected.

“It not only puts those drivers or riders in danger but puts the lives of every single other road user travelling around them at risk,” Supt White said.

“We have seen far too much trauma on our roads this year.

“This operation is not about detecting motorists doing the wrong thing – it’s about instilling awareness and making sure each and every motorist understands they have a responsibility when it comes to keeping our roads safe and driving down road trauma.”

A total of 41 infringement notices were also issued in relation to speeding offences.

Operation Armada ran from 7pm last night (19 July) to 2am this morning (20 July).
